How to practice a time signature

  1. 1

    Pick a time signature

Choose a meter such as 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, 5/4 or 7/8. The Explore tab shows its accent pattern, strong and weak beats, groupings and conducting pattern.

  2. 2

    Start the metronome

Open the Metronome tab, set the tempo, pick a subdivision feel and press Start Metronome. Strong beats click louder and every beat lights up as it plays.

  3. 3

    Play along

Count and play with the accented pulse until the meter feels natural, then raise the tempo or move on to the Polyrhythm and Exercises tabs.

Feel every meter, from 4/4 to 11/8

Common time (4/4) feels natural, but waltzes (3/4), compound meters (6/8) and odd meters (5/4, 7/8) each have a distinct pulse. Seeing and hearing the accents makes these patterns click far faster than counting alone, so you can play them with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a time signature?

A time signature tells you how many beats are in each measure and which note value counts as one beat. In 4/4, for example, there are four quarter-note beats per bar.

How do I practice odd time signatures?

Pick a meter like 5/4 or 7/8, start the metronome at a slow tempo and count its groupings out loud — for 7/8 in 3+2+2, that is 1-2-3 1-2 1-2. The metronome sounds the strong beats louder; speed up once the pattern feels steady.

What do the top and bottom numbers mean?

The top number is how many beats are in a measure; the bottom number is the note value that gets the beat (2 = half note, 4 = quarter note, 8 = eighth note). In compound meters such as 6/8, the eighth notes are felt in groups of three, so 6/8 has two main beats.

Is the time signature tool free?
