BPM & Key Tools

Find how fast a song is and what key it's in. Upload an audio file to detect its BPM and key together, look into the key in more depth with its scale, chords and the other keys it could be, or tap along to measure the tempo when you have no file at all.

Which tool should I use?

BPM Finder
You have the song as an audio file and want its tempo and key in one go. It shows the BPM with its half-time and double-time values and the key with a confidence score, and has a tap tab for checking the tempo by ear.
Song Key Finder
You mainly need the key. Upload the song to see the most likely key with a confidence score, its relative key, the notes of its scale, its chords and the other keys the song could be in.
Tap Tempo BPM Counter
You don't have an audio file, or you want the tempo of a live performance or a single section. Tap along to the beat and the BPM appears from the fourth tap.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the tempo and key of a song?

Upload an audio file of the song to the BPM Finder, which detects both the BPM and the key. To check the tempo by ear, tap along with Tap Tempo BPM; to look into the key in more depth, use the Song Key Finder.

What's the difference between the BPM Finder and the Song Key Finder?

Both detect a song's key from an audio file. The BPM Finder also measures the tempo, so it's the quickest way to get both numbers. The Song Key Finder focuses on the key: it adds the relative key, the scale, the chords in the key and the other keys the song could be in.

What if the BPM is half or double what I hear?

Tempo detection can lock onto a faster or slower layer of the rhythm. The BPM Finder shows the half-time and double-time values next to the result; pick the one that matches the pulse you tap your foot to, or tap along to check.

What if the detected key seems wrong?

The most common mix-up is between a major key and its relative minor, such as C major and A minor, because they share the same notes. Check which chord the song feels resolved on, or look at the other candidate keys in the Song Key Finder.

Which audio files can I upload?

Common audio files such as MP3, WAV, FLAC and M4A, up to 50 MB.

Can I find a song's BPM without an audio file?

Yes. Play the song from anywhere and tap along with Tap Tempo BPM, or tap on the BPM Finder's tap tab.

Are these BPM and key tools free?

Yes. Every tool is free to use with no signup.
