Piano Chord Lookup
Piano Chord Lookup shows any piano chord on a keyboard — the exact keys, which hand and finger plays each one, and every inversion — and works the other way too: press the keys you're playing and it names the chord. 36 chord types in every key, with correctly spelled notes, free and with no signup.
How to find a piano chord
- 1
Choose how to search
Use Look up a chord when you know the chord's name, or Name the keys when you have your hands on a chord and want to know what it is.
- 2
Enter the chord or press its keys
Type a name such as Ebmaj7, F#m or C/E, or pick a root and chord type. To name a chord, press its keys on the on-screen keyboard; the lowest key is the bass.
- 3
Pick a voicing or inversion
See the chord in root position, as an open, drop-2 or shell voicing, or in each inversion. The keyboard marks every key with the finger that plays it and lists which hand plays what.
- 4
Play and practice it
Play the chord or its notes one at a time, open a related chord or a progression that uses it, and copy a link to come back to it.
A piano chord finder that works both ways
Search any chord to see exactly where to put your hands, or press keys on the keyboard to find out what chord you're playing. Both use the same chord engine as the Chord Finder, so names and note spellings always agree.
Real keys, real fingerings
Each voicing and inversion is drawn on the keyboard at its actual pitch, with a finger number on every key; the notes are listed below it with their octaves (middle C is C4). Chords with five or more notes are shown split between the hands, the way pianists play them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find out what chord I'm playing on the piano?
Open Name the keys and press the keys you're holding down on the on-screen keyboard. The tool names the chord and lists other names the same keys can have, so A C E G is Am7 or C6/A. The lowest key is treated as the bass, which is how inversions and slash chords like C/E are named.
Which fingers should I use for piano chords?
Fingers are numbered 1 (thumb) to 5 (little finger) in each hand. Three-note chords usually take 1-3-5 in the right hand and 5-3-1 in the left; first inversion is 1-2-5 in the right hand and second inversion 5-2-1 in the left, because of the wider gap between two of the notes. Four-note chords take 1-2-3-5 and 5-3-2-1. The tool marks the finger for each key of every voicing and inversion.
What are chord inversions on piano?
An inversion puts a note other than the root at the bottom. C major is C E G in root position, E G C in first inversion (C/E) and G C E in second inversion (C/G). Seventh chords also have a third inversion with the seventh in the bass. Moving to the nearest inversion keeps your hand in one place when you change chords.
What are open, drop-2 and shell voicings?
They are ways of spreading a chord across the keyboard. An open voicing puts the root and fifth in the left hand and the other notes higher in the right. A drop-2 voicing takes a four-note chord and moves its second-highest note down an octave. A shell voicing plays just the root, 3rd and 7th, the notes that define a seventh chord.
How do I play ninth, eleventh and thirteenth chords?
These chords have five or six notes, more than one hand can hold comfortably, so they are split between the hands: the root in the left hand and the defining notes in the right. The fifth, and in eleventh and thirteenth chords often the ninth, can be left out; the tool marks those notes as optional.
Why are some notes written with flats and others with sharps?
Each note is spelled from the chord's root by interval, the way sheet music and chord charts write them. Eb major seventh is Eb G Bb D, not D# G A# D, so every chord tone keeps its own letter.
Is the piano chord lookup free?
Yes, it is completely free with no signup and no limits.
