Online Metronome

Online Metronome plays a steady click from 20 to 300 BPM in 14 time signatures, with accents that follow each meter — 6/8 as 3+3, 7/8 as 3+2+2 — and up to seven clicks per beat, including triplets, swing and dotted rhythms. Set the tempo by number, slider, tempo marking or tapping, and press Space to start and stop. Free, with no signup or download.

How to use the online metronome

  1. 1

    Set the tempo

Type a BPM from 20 to 300, drag the slider, use the − and + buttons, pick a tempo marking such as Andante, or tap the beat at least four times.

  2. 2

    Choose a time signature

Pick one of 14 time signatures. Each click is one beat of the bottom number — a quarter note in 4/4, an eighth note in 6/8 — and the accents mark the start of the bar and of each beat group.

  3. 3

    Add clicks between beats

Choose how many clicks each beat gets: 2 for eighth notes in 4/4, triplets, 4, or up to 7, or a long-short dotted or swing feel. The notes between beats click softer than the beat.

  4. 4

    Start the click

Press Start or the Space bar. Tempo, meter and click changes take effect from the next beat without stopping.

Practice with a metronome

Play along until your notes land exactly with the click, then make the click do less of the work: halve the tempo so it sounds on every other beat, and keep the beats in between steady yourself. To check how accurate your timing really is, the Rhythm Trainer scores your taps against a click.

Odd and compound meters

In odd meters like 5/8 and 7/8 the beats form uneven groups — 3+2 and 3+2+2 — and the accents mark where each group starts, so you can count them as 1-2-3 1-2. Compound meters like 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 group eighth notes in threes. The Time Signature Tool explains how each one is counted and conducted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this online metronome free?

Yes. It's free to use in your browser with no signup and no download.

Which time signatures does it support?

2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 2/2, 3/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/8 and 12/8. The first beat of each bar is accented, and the start of each later beat group gets a lighter accent: beat 3 in 4/4, beat 4 in 6/8, and beats 4 and 6 in 7/8 (3+2+2).

What does the BPM count in 6/8 or 7/8?

Each click is one beat of the bottom number, so in 6/8 and 7/8 the BPM counts eighth notes; in 4/4 it counts quarter notes and in 2/2 half notes. A 6/8 piece felt in two dotted-quarter beats at 60 per minute is 180 eighth notes per minute.

What are subdivisions?

Clicks between the beats. Two per beat gives eighth notes in 4/4, three gives triplets and four gives sixteenths. Dotted plays a long note three times the length of the short one, and swing plays long-short pairs on the first and last note of a triplet. They click softer than the beat so the pulse stays clear.

Can I tap in a tempo?

Yes. Tap the Tap button on the beat; from the fourth tap the metronome is set to the tempo of your taps. Pause for 2 seconds to start a new count.

Can I use it with the keyboard?

Yes. Press Space to start and stop. Every control can be reached with Tab, the tempo box takes a typed number, and the sliders move with the arrow keys.

How is the timing kept steady?

Each click is scheduled ahead of time on the browser's audio clock rather than with timers, so clicks stay evenly spaced even while the page is busy. Tempo changes take effect from the next beat.

What tempo should I practice at?

Start where you can play every note cleanly, then raise the tempo a few BPM at a time once it feels comfortable. To practice a song at its own speed, find its tempo with the BPM Finder or Tap Tempo first.
